The human meibomian gland epithelial cell line as a model to study meibomian gland dysfunction

The meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of dry eye disease (DED) throughout the world. The investigation of MGD lacks suitable in vivo and in vitro models. In 2010 a human meibomian gland epithelial cell line (HMGEC) was established, so far the only available meibomian gland cell line. The characterization of HMGEC is of major importance to clarify its suitability for studying the meibomian gland (patho)physiology in vitro. Tear Film Surface Quality in Modern Daily Disposable Contact Lens Wear

Objectives As reported previously, tear film surface quality (TFSQ) should be considered in contact lens (CL) fitting. This study followed noninvasive keratograph tear film break-up time (NIKBUT) in CL wearers for 12 months to validate its clinical utility in predicting CL performance. Methods Fifty-five subjects (M/F=17/38) aged 26±4 years were prescribed silicone hydrogel or hydrogel CLs. Objectives The aim of this study was to examine visual function and eye symptoms in fibromyalgia patients, with a particular focus on dry eye syndrome and eye pain. Methods A tertiary care center-based cross-sectional study was carried out in chronic musculoskeletal pain patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Chronic musculoskeletal pain patients without fibromyalgia were enrolled as a comparison group. The stability of the tear film plays an important role in the optical quality of the eye. Various methods have been developed to quantify the contribution of the tear film to optical quality, including the double-pass optical method, Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensing, videokeratoscopy, retroillumination analysis, and interferometry. Proteomics Differentiate Between Thyroid-Associated Orbitopathy and Dry Eye Syndrome.

PURPOSE: In patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), the dry eye syndrome occurs frequently, and symptoms and signs of both disorders overlap making early and accurate differential diagnosis difficult. A differentiation via specific markers is warranted. METHODS: Tear fluid samples of 120 subjects with TAO, TAO + dry eye, dry eye, and controls were collected. Evaluating tear clearance rate with optical coherence tomography

Purpose: To assess the early-phase of tear clearance rate (TCR) with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to determine the association between TCR and other clinical measures of the tear film in a group of young subjects with different levels of tear film quality. Role of the tear film in the optical quality of the human eye.

This paper reviews recent studies of the role of the tear film in the optical quality of the eye. Recent investigations focus on the dynamics of the tear film after a blink and its important role in the optical quality of the eye. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand the optical and visual impact of tear-film breakup in normal eyes and dry eyes. It was noted that patients with dry-eye syndrome have large optical aberrations compared with those in normal eyes, which may be the cause of blurry vision associated with the syndrome.
